Alonso Menendez was a wealthy Spaniard who had worked in the tobacco business in New York and Florida before going to Cuba in the early 1930's. In July 1935, he purchased the Particulares Factory. Immediately after the acquisition of the Particulares Factory, Alonso Menendez created a new brand named Montecristo. In July 1936, Alonso Menendez founded a new firm bearing his and his partner's name, the Menendez, Garcia y Cia Ltda.
